I am a firm believer in "give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day, teach a man to fish and he'll eat for a lifetime." Unfortunately, a lot of government programs are more along the lines of giving the man a fish!
We do need to create our own greatness indeed!

Great reminder that we are 100% responsible for are own lives, and that one of the best levers we have for helping others is to encourage them to accept responsibility for making their lives better.

I'm living proof that it doesn't have to be the welfare way. My family was on welfare when i was a kid. My dad was disabled and had five kids to feed when he lost all means of support. I watched dad work very hard to learn a new skill to bypass his disability, and fight his way out of the welfare system. Incredibly the social worker for my family threatened to have us kids removed if dad went to work. Yes the system works to keep itself alive. Guess that's why i have always been self employed.
like Steve said, everyone should read this post. Great work Lynn.

Lynn,

We need to stand up for oursleves to creat greatness.

What we all need is INDEPENDENT thinking & subsequent massive actions. Many of us think irrationbally that we need others' approval to survive.

But then, there's a fine line of between being self-indulging or irresponsible and self-disciplined & accountable.

Just read Mark Joyner's sale copy for one of his offerings. In it, there's a gem:

Irrational Belief:

"I need the approval of the people I love and respect to be happy."

Healthier Alternative:

"Approval can be very gratifying but I don't need it to survive. In fact, getting approval all the time simply isn't possible and seeking it guarantees unhappiness."

Both Mark & Kevin Hogan advise us not to be obliging to social & cultural pressures when we live our life.

Sadly there are people whose lives depend on others being dependent on them. These are often the people tasked with helping those in poverty to fight their way out. You have pointed out a hard truth, that we all need to struggle and to be responsible for our own success and our own welfare.

I wish more people would read this post and follow it's advice.

The magic of the time we are in now is that we can change the outcome.

When my youngest was four years old she was a shy child. Once we went to the mall and there was a song contest. She really wanted to compete but hid behind me obviously torn. I explained the people were conditioned to clap and support her no matter what. We watched a few people get up and perform - sure enough the audience applauded even when the acts were terrible. The MC called for another performer and out from behind me climbed my shy little daughter. She didn't seem nervous as she sang, and of course the crowd applauded as their parents, and their grandparents did before them.

Yet this is their choice.

Hi Lynn,

Indeed, I remember reading a book in 9th grade I think it was about the inner-city Boston school system. And then years later reading John Giotto (NY State award winning public school teach working in inner-city schools doing innnnnnteresting new things with education rather than schooling).

To wake up from the trance and realize that those programs are pretty much a new slavery and indentured servitude offering no liberty (freedom w/responsibility, invigorating idea, isn't it?). In presses down on people's potential. All those wasted lives. All those wasted gifts that could have been sown into communities' lives. That is indeed a tragedy.

Books are often free or near-free and offers access to wonderful education and learning and hopefulness for breaking out of that slavery cycle.

I always enjoy reading your Warrior of Success blog, Lynn. Keep it up and keep inspiring us from the trenches.

Happy Dating and Relationships,
