What Is Covert Hypnosis?
Posted on September 22nd, 2009 13 commentsCovert Hypnosis is the ability to subtly communicate with another person’s subconscious mind without them noticing. As it often takes place in the course of a seemingly regular conversation, it is also known as Conversational Hypnosis.
I have always been amazed by hypnosis. That is why I went through the 120 hour certification in 2002 and still use it. Covert Hypnosis and NPL caught my attention the same year and I’ve been studying both for a long time now.
The objective is to change the intended behavior – a sales person, for example, telling the client how good she will feel buying the new product. An intentional use of carefully selected words, body language, intentional gestures that seem commonplace (pointing in a certain direction) and facial expressions (a frown to the buyer to convey the unspoken opinion that she is making a mistake) in order to covertly communicate with someone’s subconscious mind.
The final objective is to have the person make their own decision to change their mind.
It is a form of hypnosis attempting to achieve near hypnotic states in the listener. In covert hypnosis the subject is unaware that the hypnotist is either a hypnotist, or hypnotizing them, or that anything out of the ordinary is occurring.
Covert hypnosis is a phenomenon not too different from indirect hypnosis (as derived from Milton H. Erickson popularized as The Milton Model.

As a kid I wanted to know how cars, bikes, dirt bikes, and go-carts worked. By the time I was in high school I wanted to know how the human mind worked and why people acted the way they did.
Then I asked myself how one person could live a life of success and achievement and a person with the same education and start in life end up in prison or on the streets broke.
I still work on that today!

Hi Lynn,
indeed, it is another excellent persuasion and influence CD course from Kevin Hogan. Highly recommend. The thing about their changing their mind themselves, it may not occur all in 1 meeting. The affects may need to work themselves out for a few days, a few weeks, to a few months. And it is SO intriguing, fascinating and profitable when they do.

Covert hypnosis is pretty cool. I think of it as having access to new resources – in someone else.

The trained hypnotherapist must have a good dialogue with the patient. Hypnosis cannot be forced on the patient. The patient must agree to go along with the hypnosis session. Normally the talk between the two will include questions and answers as well as an explanation of what is about to take place.
