Success Skills – Part 2

Five - Write your goals down. Most people never write down their goals
because they say they know what they are and don’t need to. The winners in
life write down their goals in a clear focused manner. Just by writing down
your goals you start the Attitude of Attraction to working for you. You will start
to attract the things you focus on the most. You should have one major goal
or purpose then smaller goals to support that one big goal or purpose. When I
started on my black belt in Kenpo Karate I knew the big goal was the black
belt, but the most important belt is the first belt. The smaller goals will
always support the big goals. Write your goals down in the present tense as if
they were already here. Write your goals down with a deadline. Give yourself
a time limit to accomplish each goal. (Things happen and if you don’t make your
deadline, create a new on.) Make sure each goal is measurable. For
example, you can measure a salary increase or losing weight.
Six - Determine the price you’ll have to pay for it. I know you’re saying,
what? Pay for it? Yes, here’s what I’m saying. What are you going to have to
learn to reach your goal? How hard do you need to work for it? What are you
willing to sacrifice for it? Are you willing to stay up late at night and get up
early for it? Are you willing to sweat hard for it? If you can’t answer these
questions, then you are not committed to your goal. You must pay the price.
There’s no free lunch in this life. You must pay in advance.
Seven - Write down every reason you can to support your major goal or
purpose. Why is it you are working toward this goal? Through research we
know that if we have reasons for our goals we tend to stay focused on the
goal at hand. I myself do what I do because I had people in my life that said I
couldn’t do the things I said I wanted to do. They would laugh or just roll
their eyes and walk away. Some were my own family. So think of reasons
that will inspire you. Reasons that will get you re-fired for action when you
need it.
Eight - Create a plan and make it happen. Write out your plan in detail. Go
back about every three months and reevaluate where you are. You can’t build
something that will last without a plan. Start where you are now and think
about where you’re going. Start from the foundation up. Just like a giant
skyscraper. Zig Ziglar says you can determine how high a building is going to
be by how deep the foundation is. Get your foundation deep by preparing
yourself for action with a good plan.

Writing down the pros and cons and then looking for ways to increase the pros and decrease the cons is a powerful way to increase your chances of change.

Hi Lynn,
The secret to success is having those written goals! And having them with you all the time so you can keep your focus on what you want or your WHY
Another awesome thing I do is create visuals of the goals…vision boards etc which i have found works well for me
Another powerful success post!!
Happy Easter to you and your loved ones

Written goals are great and even if that Yale study was completely fraudulent, I still think that people with written goals will succeed at a higher rate than those without.
As you discuss in #7, a major key to goals is to have a strong reason WHY you want to achieve the goal. THis creates the PULL that we need to weather the challenges.

Hey Lynn,
This is a great continuation from your last post.
I think that number seven is key.
If we truly understand why we want something, and keep that in mind at all times we’ll feel a strong pull towards the target.
It is this focus that keeps us going through the tough times and phases of a lack of confidence.
I always love your posts. Looking forward to getting your ebook!

Both these last two posts together are awesome. The part about surrounding yourself with positive people is also a big part of success. Negativity sabatoges everything else!

Good advice, especially pay in advance. Most will say/think: If you pay me more, I will do more…… never realizing they are putting the cart before the horse.
Thanks

Lynn – thanks for another great list of success skills to keep in mind.
I wonder sometimes if people don’t write down their goals because they’re afraid that if they see them in black and white, they’ll feel more guilty if they don’t take action to make them happen or worse yet – that they might fail to achieve the stated goal.
Skill number five reminds me of the Chinese adage – A journey of a thousand miles starts with one step. You have to have a destination in mind otherwise you will end up somewhere other than your destination.
Great post!

Your point about the written goals is very well taken. We all probably know this or at least have heard it at one time or another, but I would lay odds that very few of the people reading this has a current list of written goals.
If they do have such a list, I would be even more doubtful that they took purposeful action every day on reaching those goals.
If these two things were all that anyone did I think they would be amazed at their progress in a year’s time.

Excellent points. Clearly knowing the “Why” behind our goals is key, as is accepting that we must pay in advance.
All the best,

I like number six. I work with a number of young professionals and when I listen to their goals, I always ask “What have you done to deserve what you want?” Some never figure out what that means.

goals are great. i know lots of people that tell me they have great goals for the coming year. when i ask if they have them written down most say they know what they want so no need to write it down. goals take action to get them started. even if it’s only writing them down.

indeed, studies show that the success rate of goal achievement is GREATLY increased by those who write them. in addition, to review them. Then again, getting a coach (like a good Sales Manager) to be your Wilderness Guide to help you in the PROCESS of implementation is fantastic for fully realizing your goals to completion.

Great advice for those of us that are striving toward challenging goals.

It’s back to those goals. You lay it out very clearly. The importance of having goals and the importance of honoring and following through on them.
