Success and Procrastination.
Posted on May 8th, 2009 17 commentsWhy Do We Procrastinate?
2009 is 1/3 of the way gone and many of us have started to think about resolutions: new health program, cleaning the garage, going back to school, update that resume. But, the true sad thing is most of us will not follow through on any of those goals.
Procrastination is a very costly curse. I remember my Parents would say, “never put off till tomorrow what can be done today.”
Procrastination causes lack of productivity, worry and low self-esteem. For that reason psychologists would love to figure out what’s going on in the mind that makes it so hard to actually do what we set out to do.
An international team of psychologists in Germany wanted to see if there might be a link between how we think of a task and our tendency to postpone it.
The findings, reported in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science, were very clear. Even though all of the students in the test were being paid upon completion of a task, those who thought about the task abstractly were much more likely to procrastinate and in fact some never got to the assignment at all.
By contrast, those who were focused on the how, when and where of doing the task got started much sooner, suggesting that they hopped right on the assignment rather than delaying it.
Research information gathered from Science Daily.
Have a great weekend!

This makes complete sense, thinking of the how, when and where of getting it done puts focus on action. Very insightful, thank you.
All the best,

How to Get Organized, Stop Procrastinating, and Set Goals for Small Business Success -
I’ve been procrastinating on a task today, so this blog is particularly timely.
I’ve been very aware that I’ve been doing it, but I’m also aware that my mind is working in the background to create a better start point.
I will start the writing on Monday morning. So I suppose I’ve moved from the abstract to the practical now!

Procrastination is a complex issue.
I like that you break everything down so clearly.

File procrastination with all the other good intentions we have… It is indeed a complex issue. I have found more often than not the actual “doing” of the item in question takes less time and effort than I’ve build it up in my mind to require. If I give myself a time limit “out” that usually helps. If I say, “I’ll work on this for 30 minutes and then see where I’m at” I often get the project accomplished and checked off my to-do list. If I don’t get it done, then at least I’ve reduced the size and scope of the project and I can regroup accordingly.

Fix procrastination and many ills would be solved. If only there was a pill.

I have watched myself do it and it still confuses me. I will get multiple things done but often just not the main thing! It is something I am looking into these days. I do so much but there are certain things that for some reason I avoid. And it isn’t for not wanting to do them or not liking to do them. I almost have it figured out. When I do I will shout from the mountain tops the solution!!!

Procrastination is “Practicing for Death!”
Its a fear that stops us from doing and Kevin does have a brilliant program called “Life Storms” that deals with it..If you haven’t got it grab it!

I hate it when I procrastinate and I know consciously that I’m doing it, and I still do nothing about it. I really have to work on that.

Thank you for addressing Procrastination. So much of it is indeed practicing for Death and has so much unexpressed emotional communication connected with it.
Great post.
