Success and Busy Work.
Posted on May 11th, 2009 16 commentsSuccess and Busy Work.
Are you working hard today? Are you in a busy state of mind?
So many people are busy with just being busy they never get much done. You’ve seen the type, their busy, busy, running around in circles and telling any person that will listen how busy they are. “I’m so busy, I just don’t have the time and I’m so busy.”
But, by the end of the day they feel like they didn’t get much done. Hey, I’ve been there myself.
Busy work does not necessarily mean productive work in almost any activity.
I see people at the gym every single day that will say, “I’ve been here for 3 hours today working-out.” Well if the last hour was any indication they’ve been taking a rest on the equipment and talking.
You will always be able to determine busy work from productive work if you keep a log of things you achieved during the day. Check them off as you go.
Don’t confuse busy work with productive work.
Have a great week!

Lynn,
Further more, don’t mix up activities with productivites.

Lynn – I will always be busy – but focused busy – and that is the difference. One thing at a time until it is done; always understanding the priorities of what is next.

Great post!
I do this sometimes. Running around “getting things done” without taking the time to think about what I’m achieving.
I call this being “a busy idiot”.
I think we can all be “busy idiots” sometimes!

Great point – there is a world of difference.
Today I knew I needed to get my head down and write – I’ve been knowing that I needed to for four days.
I did what I wanted though; just under 5,000 words (part new writing part editing). More tomorrow.

Great to draw this distinction.

The activity trap is a dangerous one to fall into, and you think you are doing great at the same time…

I have recently figured this out. I do so much but I often don’t do the main things I need to be doing. A “busy idiot”, like JJ said.

been busy all day getting nothing done.

This applies to me. I’m busy all day long and get very little done. In my case it’s often a case of being in reactive mode and having to respond to the daily drama’s and tragedies.
This is something I stay watchful of everyday.

Great post drawing the distinction between productive work and busy work. It’s hard sometimes to focus on what’s truly important when we are distracted by the tyranny of the urgent.

Indeed, being BUSY is NOT tantamount to being PRODUCTIVE.
I make a short list of ESSENTIALS for the day to HELP focus my brain. Our brains are lazy and NEED help to focus. Once focused, we can be AMAZING indeed.

This is so true here in London. Most people thrive on the stress they create for themselves but don’t really achieve anything positive from the busy-ness.
All the best,

When I’m really “busy” and not getting anything done, it is because of my ADD. At least now I realize that I’m going in 5 different directions and I can reel myself in for a time. I had an episode of this just today as I found myself trying to comment on blogs, fill out forms for a dr. visit, update my website, and fold laundry. I didn’t complete anything of course!

Being busy doing something next to nothing is very easy to fall into. Using a list to work off of keeps us from this trap.
