Navy Seals, Model For Success
Posted on April 14th, 2009 21 commentsNavy Seals, Models For Success.
American captain Richard Phillips was taken hostage then freed from Somali pirates after they were persuaded by a Navy Seal Team this week.
Well, only one was persuaded, the others were killed by the Seal Team Snipers.
Special Ops are a great group to model success by. They have things in place that once set in motion have a very high percentage rate of success.
You can use this model in business, your career or day to day living.
Let’s look at it.
1. They have an objective. They know what the mission is before they start.
2. They work as a team and back each other up.
3. They sharpen their skills daily. (Stephen Covey – they sharpen the saw.)
4. They always have a contingency plan. Expect the unexpected.
5. They risk.
6. They commit.
7. They take action.
8. They never give up until the mission is complete.
9. They serve others. And aren’t we lucky.
Then after they reach the goal or complete the mission they go back and work on 2. 3. & 9.
This is only a broad scope, but you can see why they are successful at what they do.
I almost forgot one very important step.
10. *They gather as much information (intelligence) as possible before the mission starts and as the mission continues. This helps them adjust their approach if needed.
If you are already implementing these steps I salute you.

We all owe a debt to these men and women of Special Ops including the Navy Seals and Delta Force… They go into incredibly challenging circumstances and take care of business and most of the time their efforts go unmentioned.
We are lucky to have such men and women and we honor them by tending to the business of making our country financially strong. When you feel like shrugging off some task we don’t really “feel like doing” remember that we have it much easier than the soldiers or special forces, and just do it.

Hi Lynn,
Im fully in support of Rob on this one! The people that go out their day in and day out and risk their lives in the service of others and ‘don’t call it in’ when the going gets tough or they just don’t ‘feel like it’ today
There the ones that follow those principles of success as do the seals!
Superb post on what it takes to be 100% in charge of your own life
Keep them coming!

Great post! This clearly enumerates the steps involved in success. A neat aspect of your blog is that it looked at the job of the Navy Seals and showed how their success involves going through these steps.

Excellent post on all fronts. The Special Ops approach to planning and execution is an excellant model. They succeed far more than they fail. Another key to their success is the people they report to. There are serious consequences for what they do and support from above is crucial for success.
Yes, we do owe these people. They are used far more in more parts of the word than you could possibly imagine, albeit silently. We even have special submarines to secretly deploy them to points around the world. They are essential to effective US policy. My brother was Special Ops and paid the price for the rest of us 25 years ago.

Military planning is definitely something most people (myself included) call benefit from.

Great list to print out and post by the computer. Thank heavens our nation is protected by such brave men. Their commitment to excellence should be an example to all.

Great model of success to emulate!
Many years ago, I heard hat it’s extremely hard to hit a moving target, even by a marksman.

I love how you used this story to demonstrate the model. Great story. Happy endings like these are the best. I still think about the pilot landing the plane in the Hudson without one single fatality. Just awesome

Total absolute focus and commitment. It is truly rare. So rare that we usually call it obsession. But it is what gets results. Dedication. Keep working til your done(as Kevin says. Keep practising til you’ve got it down. The difference between professionals and dabblers.

Truly an amazing group of outstanding people. There was a book written a few years ago that goes into detail about that training they go through. It was by the only surviving member of a team that was wiped out-their leader was awarded the MEDAL OF HONOR for standing up out in the open in the middle of this fire fight [knowing that he would be killed]to get a signal on his cell phone so he could call for the rescue of his team.
Courage-real and true.
Thanks

The SEALS performed expertly in this situation, and their discipline and trainging is an example we can all emulate.

Discipline, it’s what makes us shine our boots till we can see our reflexion and then low crawl until the shine is gone and then polish them again. i’m sure you know what i mean.

Lynn,
Simple post but so effective. It’s continuing to do the small steps and conditioning ourselves that we can grasp success that we are after.
Look forward to tomorrow’s post.

That was an amazing way to teach me. I learn by implementing analogies and this one is amazing, really bravo I will keep this marked if you don’t mind so I can come back and always refer to it.
Thanks a lot,
Mesha:) -
Lynn, Great analogy. The Seals did the whole world a favor by standing up to the thieves. The whole country of Somalia is a lawless mess with all the hijacked ships anchored on their shore. Mark

I’m printing out the list and posting it where I’m reminded of how I approach achieving my goals. My hat is off to the Navy Seals and the other Special Ops forces who put themselves in harms way on a regular basis for their country and the people they serve, you and I.
