  • How Long Will It Take To Get My Blackbelt?

How Long Will It Take To Get My Blackbelt?

If I had a dollar for each time I was asked that question….I’d have a few bucks by now.

Most people are always stuck with how long a thing will take to achieve or to receive.

When I have a new karate student walk in my door 9 out of 10 will ask that question. How long will it take for me to get my blackbelt?

I usually say….. As long as it takes.

Can you imagine if people walked up to Thomas Edison and ask… “How long will it take you to get that light bulb thing worked out?” I’m sure Edison would have responded … Until it is done!

Human nature has a tendency to want things ..NOW.

I can understand that train of thought, we are all wired to do things as fast as we can and to fill our needs as fast as we can.

If you look back through history, humans had times when they didn’t know what to expect day to day. They did know that life was short and they had a need to conserve energy because their needs may not be meet for long periods of time.

Am I saying that people are lazy? For the most part…..Yes. Again…we are wired that way.

But, that is not altogether a bad thing!

If you look at most of the advanced technology over the past 50 years, it came about because we wanted things …Now!

Think about all the things in your life that are now faster, better and bigger and have changed over the past few years.

But, never forget….. some of the things you work toward will take as long as it takes.

That will apply to Business, Relationships, Fitness, Education and many other areas in life.

    Learn -> Apply -> Learn -> Apply -> -> -> It Never Ends.

    • It is the journey, not the destination that really matters.

One possible answer to the black belt question– I can sell you a black belt today for $45. But to give you the skills and knowledge that the belt symbolizes, that is something that will depend on you and me working together. For however long it takes us to master the skills…

    • I always think of business when I hear the term “black belt” for the reason that many people would like to achieve something but quit before they get there. How many students start off by saying they want the “black belt” but fall out because the journey is too hard. This goes for sales, working out, relationships. I like your saying “as long as it takes”

    • You could not be more on target we are a society of I want it now. We are lazy and technology helps us to be lazy. I feel sorry for the people who live to play video games because they dont have to go out and do any thing physical.

    • Great article, hey I stumbled on to this story while searching for popular lyrics. Thanks for sharing I’ll tell my friends about this too.

    • Hi Lynn,

While I DO want THINGS and certain RESULTS, I have shifted a lot over the years to enjoy the process and the journey more. It is the WHO we are becoming by attaining the black belt which we desire. Only we do not know that until we are on that path and striving, don’t you think?

    • Hi Lynn,

I noticed you had an ad on your site for MMA…gosh I’ve always wanted to learn martial arts and get good enough for a black belt. Once I start there will be no stopping me heh heh!

      Blessings,
      K.

    • I am one of those people who would ask that question. But I would ask because I need to know what the end point is – just because. It’s just how I think. I’m not sure I could take a course like that not knowing if it would take 1 year or 10. But, just because I am given the end point in time, doesn’t mean I’d get upset if I didn’t finish by that date. I was always told it would take 4 years to get a bachelors degree in college – I won’t tell you how long it took me!!!!LOL

    • Excellent blog post!

I often hear the same thing about being a good guitar player or good singer.
So much depends on the drive & determination of the individual but everyone thinks it’s a cookie cutter process.

Yep, it’ll take you 8 years to be a good guitar player, 2 years to develop bad fashion habits, 3 months to get a 3 pack a day cigarette habit & 1 evening to trash a hotel room. :)

    • Heard things about you from mutual friends and wanted to check out your site… I LIKE! Do you think this impatience is cultural based? Americans seem to always want “it” now… when I studied Kyudo in Japan I was ready toget the bow and arrow and start shooting, but they taught me form before action… proper form yeilded desired results
