Are you wasting time yourself?
Posted on August 31st, 2009 7 commentsI stopped at a local convenient store this morning to get my coffee
fix before I went to the office.I got my coffee and waited at the counter for the clerk. The clerk
was on the phone and she didn’t sound too happy or look very happy.
After I paid and walked through the door going back to my truck, I
saw a guy on his phone and he didn’t look or sound too happy himself. The guy outside was a beer delivery guy. He was pacing around in
circles yelling and ranting into the phone, “that is not my
job…..I’m not going to price all this beer…..that is her job!”Now, that clears it up. She, the clerk was on the phone inside the
store yelling to her boss…. “that is not my job.” The delivery guy
was on the phone in the parking lot having a fit yelling at his
boss… “that is not my job.”As a person that studies human behavior I just had to watch for a
little while. They were still going at it as I drove away.
That stack of beer may still be in the parking lot this afternoon
when I go back by.My opinion? After all the time they wasted ranting and yelling and
all the energy they wasted they could have split the work and had
it all done in no time at all. They wanted to blame the other person without taking the
responsibility to get the job done and go on with the journey.
That would have been more resourceful and effective. That is real
leadership and that is a quality companies are looking for all the
time. How much time do we waste?
Studies show that we waste about 2 hours a day. That equals 40
hours a month.
40 hours a month means that we get an extra 12 weeks of vacation a
year.
Have a great week & Enjoy the Journey!

Yep, it’s very easy to waste time. However, the result can be short term pleasure with long term lack of high-level achievement.

Cool story Lynn.
I think it’s great that you noticed this.

I think the greater message is how people refuse to accept responsibility for more than they have to. Great and enlightening story.

Nice way to illustrate a point. I agree with Steve in that people seem to want to do as little as possible.

Lynn,
Team work is great.
We’re in a “blame game” these days or at best most of the time in the mode of “all care but mo resposbility”.

I hate the blame game. I also HATE to think about all the time I have wasted this year.

Hi Lynne,
What a wonderful story. So true. Loss of both time and the HUGE amount of energy in the ranting and raging. The whole TYPE of energy we emit is attractive or unattractive as well. NONE of these people were attractive to success, to others for love or business relationships. no nada nothing.
Git er done!
And on an UP note, OMG, quick! there is free beer in a parking lot somewhere!
